Holiday Shopping Scams: Five Checks Before You Pay

Fake shops, copied adverts, and false delivery messages become harder to spot when people are buying in a hurry.

A bargain can borrow a trusted name

Holiday scams work because buyers are busy and good offers disappear quickly. A fake shop may copy a real logo, product photos, and customer reviews. The page can look polished while the seller behind it is impossible to find.

Pause

A countdown clock is not a reason to ignore warning signs.

Search

Look for the store through an independent search, not the advert.

Check the shop, not only the advert

Do not judge a store from the advert that brought you there. Search for the company separately, check the web address letter by letter, and look for a real return address and contact details. A padlock only means the connection is encrypted; it does not prove the seller is honest.

What to do now

Use a card or another payment method with buyer protection. Avoid bank transfers, gift cards, and cryptocurrency for an unfamiliar shop. Before paying, confirm the total price, delivery date, return terms, and exact product model.

Read the address

Look for misspellings or an unrelated domain.

Check the business

Find independent contact and company details.

Compare the price

Treat an impossible discount as a warning.

Choose protected payment

Keep a receipt and order confirmation.

Good practice and mistakes to avoid

  • The seller can be contacted outside the website form.
  • The return address and policy make sense.
  • The payment page shows the expected merchant.
  • Delivery messages are checked through the retailer's own site.

If something feels wrong after payment, contact the bank or card provider quickly. Save the advert, order page, receipt, messages, and web address before the site disappears.
