How to Check Your Windows Version Before an Update

A two-minute Windows check can tell you whether a PC is supported, up to date, and ready for the next change.

Before installing a large update or asking for support, find out exactly which Windows version is running. The name on the box is not enough. Two Windows 11 computers can be on different releases and need different fixes.

Edition: Home, Pro, Enterprise, or another Windows edition

Before you start

Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. The small window shows the edition, version, and operating-system build. You can find the same details in Settings under System, About, Windows specifications.

Follow these steps

Open winver

Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter.

Record the result

Save the edition, version, and OS build.

Open Windows Update

Check for normal security and quality updates.

Restart and confirm

Run winver again and note the new build.

Write down the edition, version, and build before changing anything. Then open Settings, Windows Update, and choose Check for updates. Install normal security updates first. Leave optional drivers alone unless they solve a problem you actually have.

Check your result

  • Important files are backed up before a major update.
  • The PC has power and enough free storage.
  • Recovery keys are available if device encryption is enabled.
  • The final build matches the update history.

That short record makes troubleshooting much easier. If an update causes trouble, you know where the computer started and can compare it with Microsoft's supported versions.
